Created by Takako Shimura and published by Ohta Publishing, the announcement comes exactly one year after the release of the final volume of the popular Josei manga series on May 13, 2024 in Japan.

For nearly a decade, this coming-of-age series captivated fans and even won an award at the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2015.

Summary

This omnibus adolescent drama is about a group of young girls who all attend a “girls-only musical school”, recounting the formidable years they shared, at times shifting between different characters’ viewpoints and time. Awajima Musical School Training Camp is where young girls gather from all over Japan to perform on stage. The unique environment of the musical school is simultaneously a respite space for these aspiring girls and also a harsh battleground that pits young students against each other. It is a place where perseverance can lead to blossoming talents, but also to a cruel reality at times. The clarity of depiction and psychological portrayal allows the subtle inner workings of each character to come through. (Source: Japan Media Arts Festival)

“I feel very fortunate to be able to absorb Takako Shimura’s skillful and skilled drawings in character design. I’ve left the directing side entirely to Director Asaka, and although it’s difficult to capture the appeal of the original artwork in an animation, I will try to see how well I can recreate it…” said character designer Kunihiko Hamada.

The Fangirl Take

I absolutely LOVE seeing more and more Shoujo and Josei manga being brought to life! Even without romantic elements, this is without a doubt my absolute favorite genre of anime.

Another exciting element of this is that it is the same studio team that brought My Love Story with Yamada-Kun Lv999 to life with Madhouse led by director Asaka Morio. I adored what they did with that series and how fantastic it was animated, so I’m pumped to see what they do here!

The only bummer is that it all but confirms that Yamada-Kun will not be getting a season 2… but hey! I could really be wrong (as I have been before…)!

Only time will tell, but I cannot wait to add this to my watchlist in the new year.
